  • Another Action by Texas Attorney General to Combat Immigration Consultant Fraud (12/6/2004)
    Thanks to the work of the Texas Office of Attorney General, the Austin yellow pages now include bilingual notices in the "Immigration Consultant" and "Notaries Public" listings explaining that only BIA-authorized representatives and attorneys may legally represent individual in immigration matters.
  • Texas Attorney General Sues Immigration Consultant (11/19/2004)
    Texas Attorney General Abbott announces the filing of a suit agains Grupo ECSA, an operation that allegedly provided unauthorized legal advise on immigration matters but "did little or nothing to advance" the cases of those who paid them for services. An announcement in Spanish also is provided.
  • Million Dollar Verdict Against Texas Immigration Consultants(53 KB - 9/14/2004)

  • Texas Attorney General Closes Down Fraudulent Immigration Consultant (7/12/2004)
    Texas Attorney General Greg Abbot annouces that an immigration consultant who presented herself as a "notario publico," falsely implying that she was a lawyer, has been shut down. The difference between notaries and attorneys is discussed.
  • Maine Governor Orders Immigration Status Be Kept Confidential (4/13/2004)
    The Governor of Maine signed an executive order decreeing that state workers not disclose certain information, including immigration status, deemed to be confidential.   • Treasury Authorizes Financial Institutions to Accept Foreign Government Issued Identification Documents (9/22/2003)
    Following its inquiry into its 5/9/03 rules implementing customer identification requirements for financial institutions under section 326 of the USA PATRIOT Act, the Treasury Department determined that it will not make changes to its rules regarding banks' ability to accept foreign identification.   • CGFNS Now Accepts TOEIC and IELTS English Language Exams (3/12/2003)
    CGFNS press release announces that, as of 3/3/03, scores from the Test of English in International Communication and the International English Language Testing System will be accepted for the visa screen.
  • Canadian Landed Immigrant Visa Applications (2/20/2003)
    The U.S. Embassy in Canada announces how it will handle visa applications for Canadian Landed Immigrants wishing to enter the United States.
  • Regulation Would Require Financial Institutions to Check IDs (7/18/2002)
    The Treasury Dept. announced proposed regulations to require financial institutions to obtain identification from customers opening new accounts. 'Non-U.S. persons' would need to provide an identification number from a government-issued document. The text of the regulations will be posted to InfoNet when published.
  • EEOC Rescinds Guidance on Undocumented Worker Protection (7/3/2002)
    In light of the Hoffman Plastic Compounds case, the EEOC rescinds its earlier guidance on remedies for undocumented workers. However, EEOC indicates that it will not, on its own initiative, inquire into a worker's immigration status.
  • USDA to Process Pending J-1 Cases; White House to Review Program (4/17/2002)
    In AILA InfoNet Doc. No. 02030671, we reported on the USDA’s decision to terminate its participation in the J-1 waiver program, effective February 27, 2002. The USDA now states that it will process the 86 pending applications for interested government agency sponsorship upon receipt of security clearances from the DOJ and DOS.

  • Update from Canada (2/1/1999)
    A national pilot project for the spouses of temporary foreign workers was launched on October 15, 1998. Under this pilot project, the spouses of workers coming to Canada for jobs in certain high skill occupations in key high growth sectors of the economy will be able to work there more easily and have to undergo fewer administrative processes.
