  • President Signs Physicians for Underserved Areas Act (12/11/2006)
    On 1/12/07, President Bush signed the Physicians for Underserved Areas Act (PL 109-477). The bill extends for two years a visa waiver program, often referred to as Conrad 30, which allows foreign doctors who work in underserved areas to remain in the country after completing their medical training.

  • President Signs into Law Expanded Visa Access for Athletes (12/11/2006)
    On 12/22/06, President Bush signed the Creating Opportunities for Minor League Professionals, Entertainers, and Teams through Legal Entry (COMPETE) Act of 2006 (PL 109-463). The bill expands P-1 nonimmigrant visa access to allow certain categories of athletes to perform or compete in the U.S.

  • President Signs Defense Authorization, Enacting H-2B Relief (10/18/2006)
    On 10/17/06, President Bush signed the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2007 (H.R. 5122) into law. Section 1074 of the bill includes a one year extension of the returning worker exemption to the H-2B visa cap. H.R. 5122 provides for the extension to take effect beginning 10/1/06.

  • Senate Appropriators Block Harsh Enforcement Provisions from Conference Agreement on DHS Funding (9/26/2006)
    On 9/25/06, House and Senate conferees agreed on a $34.8 billion conference report to fund the DHS in FY2007. A group of Senate appropriators prevented the inclusion in the report of harsh immigration enforcement measures that House Republicans attempted to attach to it.
