On 4/26/06, the Senate adopted an amendment to the FY 2006 supplemental appropriations bill (HR 4939) that would increase border security funding by $1.9 billion. The amendment, offered by Senator Judd Gregg (R-NH), was adopted by a vote of 59-39. It would cut $1.9 billion from emergency defense funding in the measure and shift it to border security instead. An alternative proposal by Senator Harry Reid (D-NV), which would have increased border security funding without decreasing defense spending, was defeated by a vote of 44-54. The Senate is expected to vote on passage of the supplemental appropriations package early next week.
