INS Extends Enrollment Period for SENTRI

The INS has extended the enrollment period for SENTRI (Secure Electronic Network for Travelers Rapid Inspection) participants from one to two years. SENTRI is an automated system that enables enrolled motorists at selected land border ports to complete the inspections process and enter the U.S. more expediently using dedicated commuter lanes.

INS Informs Public Regarding Changes in Filing Fees

A 2/27/03 INS News Release informs the public of a new interim rule that readjusts the agency's fee schedule to restore surcharges used for asylum and refugee services, fee exemptions and fee waivers. The surcharges were deleted in a 1/24/03 rule, in accordance with § 457 of the Homeland Security Act, but that provision has now been repealed.

Special Registration Groups 3 & 4 Deadlines Extended

Persons subject to the 2/21/03 and 3/28/03 deadlines for call-in NSEERS special registration (Groups 3 & 4, respectively) will have an additional 4-week period, until 3/21/03 (for Group 3) and 4/25/03 (for Group 4), in which to register, under a Fed. Reg. notice to be published on 2/19/03.

INS Campaign Seeks Out Applicants for LIFE Legalization Benefits

The INS announced a public outreach campaign on 1/27/03 to encourage thousands of eligible individuals to file applications for LIFE Legalization benefits. The deadline for filing is 6/4/03. The outreach program is national in scope but concentrated in 4 metropolitan areas including Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston and New York City.

The INS has issued a notice to the public containing a chart listing the new immigration benefit application fees that took effect on 1/24/03. The revised fees reflect the removal of the surcharge to fund asylum, refugee and fee waiver applications, pursuant to § 457 of the Homeland Security Act of 2002.
