  • Arizona Passes Strict Immigration Act(522 KB - 4/14/2010)
    On 4/13/10, the Arizona state House of Representatives passed a bill (S.B. 1070) directing police to determine the immigration status of non-criminals if there is a “reasonable suspicion” they are undocumented. The state Senate passed a similar measure earlier this year. AILA Doc. No. 10041460.

  • Illinois E-Verify Law to Take Effect on 1/1/10(112 KB - 12/4/2009)
    Text of a bill signed into law by Illinois Governor Quinn in August 2009 that amends the Illinois Privacy in the Workplace Act by eliminating the law’s prohibition of employer use of E-Verify. The bill (SB 1133) is set to take effect on 01/01/2010. AILA Doc. No. 09120415.

  • L.A. City Council Passes Day Laborer Ordinance(207 KB - 9/12/2008)
    On 08/14/08, the Los Angeles City Council unanimously approved an ordinance (180174) that requires new or renovating big-box home-improvement stores, like Home Depot, to set aside a "suitable area" for day laborers which would include drinking water, toilets, trash cans, tables and seats.   • Missouri Passes Last Minute Omnibus Immigration Law (Updated 7/14/08) (7/14/2008)
    On 5/16/08, under pressure from Governor Matt Blunt, and just minutes before breaking for the summer, lawmakers in Missouri gave final approval to a bill that adds new restrictions and requirements for undocumented immigrants, the cities they live in, and the businesses that employ them.   • South Carolina Passes Illegal Immigration Reform Act (7/8/2008)
    On 06/04/08, South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford signed into law H.B. 4400, an omnibus immigration bill providing that a person confined in jail shall be checked for lawful status, all employers must enroll in the E-Verify program, and illegal aliens are prohibited from obtaining public benefits.   • Arizona Passes Law Barring Real ID Compliance (7/7/2008)
    On 06/17/08, Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano signed into law HB 2677, which bars Arizona’s compliance with the REAL ID program. AILA Doc. No. 08070764.

  • Fifth Circuit Votes to Rehear Farmers Branch Housing Ordinance Case (5/28/2008)
    On 3/21/12, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals struck down the City of Farmers Branch ordinance aimed at preventing undocumented individuals from renting housing in the city. On 7/31/12, the court voted to rehear the case en banc. AILA Doc. No. 08052897.

  • Prince William County Resolution Weakened (4/29/2008)
    On 04/29/08, the Prince William County, Virginia Board of Supervisors abolished a key part of the county's illegal-immigration policy by directing police officers to question criminal suspects about their immigration status only after they have been arrested. AILA Doc. No. 08062990.

  • Maine Passed Law Requiring Proof of Citizenship to Issue Driver's License (4/18/2008)
    On 04/18/08, Maine Governor John Baldacci signed into law LD 2309, which requires a driver license applicant to presents valid documentary evidence of legal presence in the United States. AILA Doc. No. 08041890.

  • Mandatory E-Verify Bill Signed Into Law by Mississippi Governor (3/17/2008)

  • Utah Passes Omnibus Immigration Law (3/13/2008)

  • Idaho Passes Restrictive Driver License Law (3/5/2008)
    On 03/05/08, Idaho Governor C.L. "Butch" Otter signed HB 366 into law, which prohibits driver’s licenses from being issued to persons not lawfully present in the US. AILA Doc. No. 08061768.

  • Rhode Island Governor Issues Executive Order Aimed at Controlling Illegal Immigration (2/27/2008)
    On 2/27/08, Governor Donald Carcieri issued executive order 08-01 which requires state agencies to verify the status of employees, allows the state to inform people whose identity was stolen, and directs the State Police and the Department of Corrections to work with ICE.
