House Immigration, Border Security, and Claims Subcommittee Votes to Eliminate Diversity Visa Program

Cite as "AILA InfoNet Doc. No. 05090967 (posted Sep. 9, 2005)"

The House Judiciary Subcommittee, chaired by Representative John Hostettler (R-IN), approved by voice vote H.R. 1219, a bill introduced by Representative Bob Goodlatte (R-VA), that would eliminate the diversity visa lottery. Proponents of the bill alleged that the program leaves the U.S .susceptible to terrorism and is an administrative burden to the agency. It is not known when the bill will go the House Judiciary Committee for a vote. Representative Goodlatte worked in the last Congress to eliminate the diversity visa: While the Judiciary Committee at that time voted to eliminate it, the full House did not vote on the measure.
