On 6/20/06, the House of Representatives passed the Nursing Relief for Disadvantaged Areas Reauthorization Act of 2005 (H.R. 1285) by voice vote. As amended, the bill would extend for three years the Nursing Relief for Disadvantaged Areas Act of 1999. (The original bill, introduced by Rep. Bobby Rush (D-IL) on 3/14/05 and cosponsored by Rep. Henry Hyde (R-IL), would have extended the Act indefinitely.) The Nursing Relief for Disadvantaged Areas Act of 1999 provided for up to 500 foreign nurses to come to the U.S. annually on H-1C visas to work in medically underserved areas. A similar bill in the Senate, S. 1550, introduced by Sen. Richard Durbin (D-IL), has seen no legislative action.
