NYC Mayor Bloomberg announced “Immigrants: The Lifeblood of New York City” plan, which represents his vision for the third term. The plan includes the creation of an Immigrant Advisory Board and an initiative in which NYC will partner with private law firms to move deferred first-year legal associates to nonprofit organizations for fellowships. New York Attorney General Issues 30 More Subpoenas in Expanding Immigration Fraud Investigation

Texas Governor Adds Ranger Recon Teams to Border

On 9/11/09 Texas Governor Rick Perry announced the addition of highly skilled Ranger recon teams will operate along the Mexican border. The Rangers will identify high-intensity smuggling routes in remote areas, and conduct operations to reduce border-related crime in these corridors. AILA Doc. No. 09091168.
New York Attorney General Shuts Down Three Companies Providing Fraudulent Immigration Legal Services

On 8/20/09 New York Attorney General Cuomo announced that his office had shut down three companies for providing unauthorized and fraudulent legal services to immigrant communities in New York City and Long Island. The firms are permanently barred from operating a business that provides immigration-related services and must collectively pay over $100,000 in penalties. AILA Doc. No. 09082465.
New York City Arrests Two Individuals for Operating a Fraudulent Immigration Consultation Business

Manhattan District Attorney Robert M. Morgenthau announced today the indictment and arrest of two individuals for illegally practicing law and operating a fraudulent immigration consultation business in Chinatown. The indictment marks the first time that New York City’s Immigration Assistance Services Law has been criminally enforced. AILA Doc. No. 09080763.
Iowa State Attorney’s Office Press Release on Criminal Charges Following Meatpacking Plant Raid

On 5/13/08 the U.S. State Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Iowa issued a press release stating that twenty people have been arrested on criminal charges following the ICE raid on Agriprocessors, Inc. North Carolina Community Colleges No Longer Admitting Undocumented Students

On 5/13/08 the North Carolina Community College System (NCCS) announced that it will no longer admit undocumented students into curriculum degree programs. The policy change is in response to the recent advice provided by the Office of the Attorney General on 5/6/08, and a subsequent meeting with the AG’s Office on 5/12/08. AILA Doc. No. 08051331.

Tennessee AG Sues to Halt UPL in Immigrant Community
