DHS Reports to Congress on Asylum Seeker Detentions

Section 903 of the Haitian Refugee Immigration Fairness Act (HRIFA) requires the Attorney General to regularly collect data on detained asylum seekers. The DHS has assumed this responsibility and recently issued reports on overall numbers, countries of origin, gender, age, and detention facilities for FY99 through FY02.

USCIS Report to Congress on Basic Pilot Program for Employment Verification

The USCIS report provides a summary of the basic pilot program, evaluates its problems, enhancements, and improvements, and discusses the expansion of the program to all employers in all 50 States by December 2004. Better Data Needed to Ensure ICE Compliance with Zadvydas, GAO Reports

Following its study of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) compliance with the Supreme Court decision in Zadvydas, the GAO recommends that ICE collect complete, accurate, and readily available information to assure compliance; determine ICE deportation officer staffing needs; and provide guidance to deportation officers on prioritizing. GAO Finds US-VISIT Is Inherently Risky

OIG Presents Semiannual Report to Congress on Implementation of Section 1001 of the USA PATRIOT Act

The OIG identified 17 matters that warranted opening an investigation or conducting a closer review. Complaints included allegations of excessive force and verbal abuse against inmates, denying inmates access to the law library and telephone calls, unreasonable prison cell searches, and placement in solitary confinement for no apparent reason.
