  • DOS Rule Clarifies Definition of ‘Registration’ in Connection with Application for an IV (12/17/2002)
    A 12/17/02 State Dept. final rule that took effect upon publication clarifies that the ‘registration’ of an immigrant visa (IV) applicant is defined to mean the filing of form DS-230, when duly executed, or the transmission by the DOS to the alien of a notification of the availability of an IV, whichever occurs first.

  • State Department Finalizes ‘S’ Visa Rule (11/5/2002)
    The State Dept. has finalized a rule implementing the ‘S’ nonimmigrant visa program. The S visa category is available to nonimmigrants determined by the Attorney General to have critical and reliable information concerning a criminal organization or enterprise. The final rule adopts without change the 1996 interim rule.

  • DOS Proposes Changes to Exchange Visitor Program for Professors and Research Scholars (7/2/2002)
    The State Department issued a proposed rule on June 27, 2002, that would: extend the duration of program participation for J-1 professors and research scholars from three years to five years; eliminate extensions beyond the five-year period; and place limits on repeated program participation.   • DOS Amends Eligibility for Automatic Revalidation of Expired Visa (3/11/2002)

    The State Department has published an interim rule that sets forth conditions for the use, protection, dissemination and destruction of criminal history records provided to the DOS by the FBI, pursuant to §403 of the USA PATRIOT Act.
