  • Repeal of the HIV Immigration Ban: Practice Tip (7/31/2008)
    On 7/30/08, President Bush signed into law H.R.5501. AILA alerts members that while this legislation rids the statute of unfair discrimination against foreign nationals with HIV, it does not repeal the ground of inadmissibility for those that are HIV positive.

  • HHS Reopens Physician Waiver Program with Significant New Restrictions (12/24/2003)
    The Dept. of Health and Human Services recently reopened its J-1 waiver program for physicians working in underserved areas, but with additional rules that significantly reduce the number of physicians eligible for such a waiver.

  • HHS Temporarily Suspends J-1 Shortage-Area Waiver Program (10/17/2003)
    The HHS J-1 shortage-area waiver program has informed AILA that HHS has suspended the program temporarily pending conclusion of a policy review. The HHS stopped taking applications effective October 1, 2003.
