The following immigration-related bills were introduced into the House of Representatives and the Senate this week:

Tibetan Refugee Assistance Act of 2009 (H.R. 1340)
Introduced by Rep. Miller (D-CA) on 3/5/09
Summary: Makes 3,000 immigrant visas in FY2010-FY2012 available to individuals who: (1) were born in Tibet; and (2) have been continuously residing in India or Nepal prior to the date of the enactment of this Act. Makes such visas available to the sons, daughters, grandsons, or granddaughters of such individuals.

HRIFA Improvement Act of 2009 (H.R. 1567)
Introduced by Rep. Meek (D-FL) on 03/17/09
Summary: To amend the Haitian Refugee Immigration Fairness Act of 1998.

Access to Justice Act (H.R. 1651)
Introduced by Rep. Moran (D-VA) on 3/19/09
Summary: To amend the Immigration and Nationality Act to establish a right for an alien to file a motion to reopen a case in removal proceedings if the alien can demonstrate that counsel or a certified representative provided deficient performance.

Justice for the Newark College Students Act (H.R. 1663)
Introduced by Rep. Dent (R-PA) on 03/23/09
Summary: To require (1) State and local law enforcement agencies to determine the immigration status of all individuals arrested by such agencies for a felony; (2) such agencies to report to the Secretary of Homeland Security when they have arrested for a felony an alien unlawfully present in the United States; (3) mandatory Federal detention of such individuals pending removal in cases where they are not otherwise detained, and for other purposes.

Dairy and Sheep H-2A Visa Enhancement Act of 2008 (H.R. 1660)
Introduced by Rep. McHugh on 03/23/09
Summary: To amend the Immigration and Nationality Act to provide a special rule for the period of admission of H-2A non-immigrants employed as dairy workers and sheepherders, and for other purposes.

One Strike Act (H.R. 1753)
Introduced by Rep. Brown-Waite (R-FL) on 03/26/09
Summary: To amend the Immigration and Nationality Act to include in the definition of the term "aggravated felony" a criminal violation committed by an alien who unlawfully entered the United States.
