    The GAO, on 10/17/03, sent a report to the Senate and House Committees on the Judiciary and Appropriations concerning benefit applications under the Haitian Refugee Immigration Fairness Act.

  • GAO Issues Report on Social Security Number (SSN) Issuance(837 KB - 10/16/2003)
    GAO report finds that actions have been taken to strengthen procedures for issuing SSNs to non-citizens but some weaknesses remain. GAO calls for SSA to follow its own inspection practices in addition to DHS verification requirements.

  • GAO Calls for Better Tracking of H-1B Program (10/3/2003)

  • GAO Recommends DHS Action to Mitigate Procurement Risks(446 KB - 8/28/2003)
    The GAO found the INS lacking in basic infrastructure to ensure that its contracting activity was effective, and recommended that the DHS assess and develop strategies to improve oversight, early in the development of the new department.

  • GAO Report Cites Vulnerabilities and Inefficiencies in the Inspections Process(83 KB - 8/28/2003)
    The GAO found that inspections were not conducted consistently and according to policy, and that inspectors did not always receive necessary training. The GAO reported the plan for dedicated commuter lanes for low-risk travelers will increase efficiency.

  • GAO Report Finds INS Lacks Reliable Address Information (11/25/2002)
    A GAO report finding that INS lacked reliable address information, and that the issue was two-fold, a lack of compliance with the requirement that aliens notify INS of any change of address and a lack of publicity about the requirement and inadequate processing procedures for changes of address.
