AILA Stands with Fast for Families
Will Fast in Solidarity with Immigration Reform Supporters on Tuesday, December 10th
Join us as AILA and AIC Fast for Reform.
On Tuesday, December 10th, hundreds of AILA members and staff will take part in a 24 hour fast to urge the House of Representatives to pass immigration reform this year. Sign up to be a part of AILA's Fast for Reform and receive more information.
Since November 12th faith, immigrant rights and labor leaders have been abstaining from all food on the National Mall as a part of the Fast for Families campaign to move the hearts and compassion of members of Congress to pass immigration reform with a road to citizenship. After 22 days of fasting, the three core fasters, SEIU's Eliseo Medina, DREAMer and Mi Familia Vota's Cristian Avila, and NAKASEC's Dae Joong Yoon, passed on their fasts to other members of the community, including elected officials and faith leaders.
Last June, we watched the Senate pass a historic immigration reform bill with bipartisan support. Now the bill has stalled in the House of Representatives despite recent polls which found that 63% of all Americans-regardless of political affiliation-support immigration reform with a roadmap to citizenship. As AILA President Doug Stump explains, "We call on Speaker Boehner to acknowledge that immigration reform is legislation that our nation must get right in order to move forward... By AILA's count, there are enough Democrats and Republicans who support reform to get a bill passed in the House. [Speaker Boehner] should bring everyone together and get the job done. Put aside your differences for one moment and allow the needs of the many to overcome the strident rhetoric that has consumed so much of the political process. This is what Americans want and what America needs." (AILA Doc. No. 13100207.)
AILA Executive Director Crystal Williams and American Immigration Council Executive Director Ben Johnson have both committed to fasting. Will you join them?
