  • Social Security Administration Publishes its Semi-Annual Regulatory Agenda (12/23/2003)
    The Social Security Administration published its semi-annual regulatory agenda in the December 22 issue of the Federal Register. The agenda outlines current and projected rulemaking efforts by the Administration and provides an estimated timetable for each item. (68 FR 73820, 12/22/03).
  • SSA Finalizes Rule Codifying Restrictions on Issuance of SSNs for Non-Work Purposes (9/25/2003)
    The SSA has finalized without substantive change a 3/26/03 proposed rule to codify restrictions on the assignment of SSNs to aliens for non-work purposes by limiting such assignment to situations in which a federal statute or regulation, or a state or local law, requires the alien to have an SSN in order to receive a benefit. (68 FR 55304, 9/25/03).
  • SSA Proposed Rule Would Codify Restrictions on Issuance of SSNs for Non-Work Purposes (3/26/2003)
    An SSA proposed rule would codify restrictions on the assignment of SSNs to aliens for non-work purposes by limiting such assignment to situations in which a federal statute or regulation, or a state or local law, requires the alien to have an SSN in order to receive a public benefit for which eligibility has been established.   • SSA Solicits Comments on Proposed SSN Verification Service (7/17/2002)
    The Social Security Administration (SSA) solicits comments on a proposed Internet-based Social Security Number Verification Service (SSNVS) that will allow employers to perform advance verification of their employees’ name and SSN information against SSA records.
  • When Benefits Agencies Must Notify INS of Unlawful Presence (9/28/2000)
    An agency will be considered to "know" that an indivual is in the U.S. unlawfully only when the unlawful presence finding is part of a formal determination, subject to review, on a claim for a benefit specified under legislation requiring the agency to notify the INS of such unlawful presence
  • Limits Proposed for Assigning Social Security Numbers (10/12/1999)
    SSA proposal would make the only nonwork reason for assigning SSN to aliens (20 CFR 422.104) those situations where federal law requires them to have SSN in order to receive federally funded benefit. Comments due 13-Dec-99. (64 FR 55217)
  • Final Social Security Rules (10/22/1998)
    Effective November 23, 1998, these final rules describe the process by which elements of DOS and INS will collect and then forward enumeration information to the Social Security Administration (SSA).
