On 12/6/06, the House Republican Steering Committee chose Representative Lamar Smith (R-TX) to lead House Republicans as Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee. As Ranking Member, Smith will serve as a spokesman for the Republican Party and is responsible for forming the party’s policy on issues before the Committee.
Representative Smith will replace outgoing Judiciary Chairman Representative James Sensenbrenner (R-WI) as the highest ranking Republican on the Committee. Sensenbrenner was forced to give up his top seat on the Judiciary Committee when Republican leadership ruled that the six-year term limits for committee chairs include time spent as ranking Republicans in the minority. Sensenbrenner has served as Judiciary Committee Chairman for six years and is therefore ineligible to maintain his leadership position as Ranking Member.
