On 1/12/2007, President Bush signed into law the Physicians for Underserved Areas Act (PL 109-477). The bill extends for two years a visa waiver program, often referred to as Conrad 30, which allows foreign doctors who work in underserved areas to remain in the country after completing their medical training. President Signs into Law Expanded Visa Access for Athletes (12/11/2006)
On 12/22/06, President Bush signed into law the Creating Opportunities for Minor League Professionals, Entertainers, and Teams through Legal Entry (COMPETE) Act of 2006 (PL 109-463). Congress Passes Nursing Relief for Disadvantaged Areas Reauthorization Act of 2005 (12/7/2006)
On 12/6/06, the Senate passed the Nursing Relief for Disadvantaged Areas Reauthorization Act of 2005 (H.R. 1285). Passed by House on 6/20/06, the bill provides H-1C visas for up to 500 foreign nurses annually to work in medically underserved areas. AILA Doc. No. 06102762.

President Signs Defense Authorization, Enacting H-2B Relief (10/18/2006)
On 10/17/06, President Bush signed the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2007 (H.R. 5122) into law. Section 1074 of the bill includes a one year extension of the returning worker exemption to the H-2B visa cap. H.R. 5122 provides for the extension to take effect beginning October 1, 2006.

Senate Passes Military Tribunal Legislation, Rejects Habeas Corpus Amendment (9/28/2006)

Senate Appropriators Block Harsh Enforcement Provisions from Conference Agreement on DHS Funding (9/26/2006)
On 9/25/06, House and Senate conferees agreed on a $34.8 billion conference report to fund the DHS in FY07. A group of Senate appropriators prevented the inclusion in the report of harsh immigration enforcement measures that House Republicans attempted to attach to it. AILA Doc. No. 06092663.

House Passes Secure Fence Act of 2006 (9/14/2006)
