AILA and the Council Host Telebriefing on the Impact of COVID-19 on Immigration Policy at the Southern Border
On June 5, 2020, AILA and the American Immigration Council hosted a telebriefing for Hill staffers to discuss some of the sweeping changes in immigration policy that have been implemented along the southern border in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The briefing highlighted new restrictions on entry at ports of entry, recent developments in the so-called Migrant Protection Protocols program, and the recent order by the CDC that has been used to justify the expulsion of thousands of asylum seekers, including minor children, in recent months. The briefing included remarks and policy recommendations by Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, Policy Counsel with the American Immigration Council, Leidy Perez-Davis of AILA, and Dr. Ron Waldman, Professor of Global Health at George Washington University.
