AILA Presents Rep. Judy Chu with 2012 Congressional Leadership Award

NASHVILLE, TN - The American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) will award Representative Judy Chu (D, CA) with the 2012 Congressional Leadership Award, which is given annually to members of Congress who most advanced the cause of immigration and immigrants during the previous year. Representative Chu will receive the award today during AILA's Annual Conference in Nashville, TN.

Congresswoman Judy Chu is a strong advocate for effective, humane and progressive immigration reform. Rep. Chu co-sponsored the 2009 immigration reform bill CIR ASAP, DREAM, AgJobs, the leading family visa bill, and Representative Roybal-Allard's detention bill. She is a rising star who has already shown leadership in taking positions on prosecutorial discretion, the Arizona SB1070 law, family reunification, and the recent unlawful presence waiver reforms USCIS announced in January 2012.

In 2011, she was elected as the Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC). Rep. Chu also serves on the House Judiciary Committee, where she is a member of the Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security and the Intellectual Property, Competition, and the Internet subcommittees. She is also a member of the House Small Business Committee, where she is leading the Contracting and Workforce Subcommittee as the Ranking Democrat and serves on the Economic Growth, Tax and Capital Access and Agriculture, Energy and Trade Subcommittees.

Rep. Chu earned her B.A. in mathematics from UCLA and her Ph.D. in psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology. She is married to AILA member, Michael Eng.
