House Passes Five-Year E-Verify Reauthorization

7/31/08 AILA Doc. No. 08080168. Congress, Employer Compliance
On 7/31/08, the House of Representatives passed a five-year reauthorization of the E-Verify program (H.R. 6633), which is due to expire at the end of November, by a vote of 407-2.

The bill includes a provision intended to ensure the Department of Homeland Security provides timely reimbursements to the Social Security Administration for use of that agency's resources. Additionally, the bill authorizes the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to conduct two studies of the E-Verify system. One will examine the causes and effects of errors in the program, and the second will study the experiences that small businesses, nonprofit organizations and municipalities have using the program.

The bill will now head to the Senate for consideration.
