Tips for Making the Most of a Congressional Town Hall

Tips for a successful town hall meeting with a member of Congress.

  • Check your local paper or legislator's website for upcoming local Town Halls or constituent events.
  • Work with your Chapter's Advocacy Liaison to coordinate a group of chapter members to attend the Town Hall together.
  • Research the legislator's position and voting record on key and current immigration issues.
  • Review AILA's resources and materials to bolster your familiarity with the current immigration debate - start with AILA's Featured Issues page.
  • Prepare open-ended questions for your member of Congress with the intention of drawing out substantive, non-generic answers.
  • After the Town Hall or event, follow up with the member of Congress and his or her immigration staff person to introduce yourself and the chapter as a resource.
