P.L. 105-277: Lautenberg Provisions

The Lautenberg Amendment identifies categories of refugee applicants who have been victims of persecution and injustice in their homelands. The law specifically refers to Jews, Evangelical Christians, and Ukrainian Catholics from the FSU and certain South East Asians, as groups that have a history of persecution, and directs INS to take into consideration this experience when processing applications for refugee status from members of these groups.

Sec. 705. Extension of Certain Adjudication Provisions.-- The Foreign Operations, Export Financing, and Related Programs Appropriations Act, 1990 (Public Law 101-167) is amended--

(1) in section 599D (8 U.S.C. 1157 note)--

(A) in subsection (b)(3), by striking ``1997 and 1998'' and inserting ``1997, 1998, and 1999''; and

(B) in subsection (e), by striking ``October 1, 1998'' each place it appears and inserting ``October 1, 1999''; and

(2) in section 599E (8 U.S.C. 1255 note) in subsection (b)(2), by striking ``September 30, 1998'' and inserting ``September 30, 1999''.
