WASHINGTON, DC - The American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) congratulates Representative Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) on her selection to fill New York's vacant U.S. Senate seat. With her appointment, there will be either 11 or 12 new senators seated in the 111th Congress and AILA looks forward to engaging each of them on the immigration policy challenges confronting the nation.

Given New York's unique history as a landing point for new immigrants, and its unparalleled success at welcoming and assimilating immigrants, the state's U.S. senators traditionally play an important role in carrying the torch for progressive immigration policies. "With our immigration system in shambles and a major debate on overhauling the system imminent, we anticipate that Senator Gillibrand will play an important role in shaping U.S. immigration policy," said Charles H. Kuck, President of AILA. "As she moves from representing a single, largely rural district to representing one of the most populous and immigrant dense states in the country, we expect Senator Gillibrand to embrace and aggressively promote a pragmatic and progressive approach to reforming our immigration laws."
