Threats, Harassment, and Identity Theft: What Immigration Attorneys Need to Know

Threats, Harassment, and Identity Theft: What Immigration Attorneys Need to Know

The practice of immigration law increasingly includes navigating threats, harassment, and professional identity theft aimed at attorneys and their clients.

Recent reports show that these incidents are often coordinated, widespread, and designed to intimidate counsel, disrupt legal representation, or exploit vulnerable immigrants through fraud and impersonation schemes. As these risks grow, immigration attorneys need practical, informed strategies to protect themselves, their staff, and their clients—while continuing to practice effectively.

This roundtable brings together members of the AROL Task Force to discuss emerging trends, share real‑world experiences, and talk through practical steps attorneys can take when faced with threatening communications or identity misuse. The goal is to help practitioners better assess risk, respond appropriately, and understand how collective reporting and coordination can strengthen safety across the immigration bar.

  • Common patterns and warning signs in threatening correspondence and harassment campaigns targeting immigration attorneys
  • How to preserve evidence, assess risk, and determine when and how to report threats to law enforcement and other authorities
  • Practical security and safety considerations for law offices and personal settings
  • Growing risks of professional identity theft and immigration‑related fraud, and steps attorneys can take to protect their reputations and clients

This roundtable is presented by the AILA Rule of Law (AROL) Task Force.
