AAP Exclusive: Crimmigration and the Paralegal Role

AAP Exclusive: Crimmigration and the Paralegal Role

When immigration clients have been convicted or even suspected of a crime, it can have a big impact on their case regardless of what status they have or are seeking. Paralegals and law office staff play an important role in identifying when a client may have a criminal history and obtaining documentation of that history for the attorney. In this session, faculty and attendees will discuss:

  • Intake, issue spotting, and getting clients to admit or remember that they have interacted with law enforcement
  • Flagging whether a client needs to go to a state department of justice or a federal prints check
  • Understanding criminal documents: complaint, indictment, journal entry of conviction, plea sheet, etc.
  • Being able to identify these documents to know what to ask for
  • Where to have clients find these documents
  • How and where to request these documents yourself, often from different states
  • Understanding what the documents say

This roundtable is an opportunity for AILA Affiliated Paralegals to learn and discuss issues affecting legal staff, in community with each other. It's presented exclusively for AILA Affiliated Paralegals as a benefit of AAP status.
