WASHINGTON, DC - The American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) is deeply saddened by today's shocking tragedy in Binghamton, NY. From all accounts, it appears that the American Civic Association, an agency serving immigrants and refugees, was the crime scene and our deepest sympathies go out to the victims and their families. As an organization that promotes justice and advocates for fair and reasonable immigration laws, we share a mission with the immigration services center -- providing guidance for our newest Americans and those seeking to join our ranks. This is a terrible day for America and for the immigrant community. We urge everyone to come together and resist the tendency towards divisiveness and inflammatory rhetoric that runs rampant through the immigration debate.

Our prayers and condolences go to the families of all involved.
