AILA Presents Rob Cohen with the 2013 Jack Wasserman Memorial Award

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - The American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) will award Rob Cohen with the Jack Wasserman Memorial Award for excellence in litigation in business immigration. He will receive the award today during AILA's Annual Conference in San Francisco, CA.
While the usual recipient of the Jack Wasserman award is an AILA member who is known as a "litigator" - an attorney who is always in court, mounting challenges to agency decisions that may, if successful, have far-reaching impact beyond the individual client, Mr. Cohen has been selected to receive the Jack Wasserman award this year as an example to all members that litigation starts with the foundation petition and if you are faced with an intractable agency decision, that well-developed petition is the key to success in the courtroom.
Despite the fact that Mr. Cohen insists he is not a litigator, in reality he is. The fact that his petitions do not end up in court is a reflection of the skill with which he makes his case at the administrative level, long before court action is necessary. Litigation is not easy, and not without risk, but, it is the decisive tool to win for many clients the benefits they deserve under the law.
A noteworthy case that Mr. Cohen handled is Residential Finance Corporation v. USCIS, a complaint contesting the denial of an H-1B petition for a market research analyst. All too many members encounter such petition denials and many petitioners will not challenge the agency action in federal court. However, Mr. Cohen moved forward, litigated successfully, and in doing so has demonstrated to his fellow members that litigation is an important tool.
Mr. Cohen's primary area of practice is immigration and nationality law. He has extensive experience in all aspects of business and family immigration procedures. In addition to his legal experience, he is also an instructor for the Legal Assistant program at Capital University. Mr. Cohen is currently the Chair of the American Immigration Council. He has served as Chair of the AILA Ohio Chapter and also chaired the Nebraska Service Center Liaison Committee.
Mr. Cohen received his J.D. from the University of Cincinnati College of Law and A.B. from Miami University. He is admitted in the State of Ohio, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, and U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio. He has been listed in The Best Lawyers in America® in the area of Immigration Law every year since 1995, and is recognized by Ohio Super Lawyers®.
