AILA Presents Priscilla Alvarez with the 2023 Media Leadership Award

WASHINGTON, DC - The American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) recognizes Priscilla Alvarez of CNN with the 2023 Media Leadership Award, given to individuals whose efforts in the media most accurately depict immigration and immigrants.

Priscilla Alvarez is a White House reporter for CNN. Ms. Alvarez joined CNN in January 2019 as a reporter covering immigration politics and policy, traveling across the country and on the border to provide first-hand accounts on the ground. She has broken dozens of stories, including on the 2021 surge of unaccompanied migrant children at the U.S. southern border and on immigration policy changes. She was also nominated for an Emmy for the CNN team's coverage of Haitian migrants at the border and their treatment.

Prior to working at CNN, Ms. Alvarez was Assistant Editor at the Atlantic, where she edited writers for theatlantic.com, including the publication’s top traffic-driving staff writers and freelancers ranging from scholars to public figures. Earlier in her career, she was at the National Journal where she covered congressional hearings, White House briefings, and breaking news for the digital news team, pitched and executed long-term stories, and wrote and produced a daily politics newsletter with thousands of subscribers.

Ms. Alvarez, who is fluent in Spanish, grew up in Leesburg, Virginia, and briefly lived in Panama. She's a graduate of Virginia Tech where she majored in journalism and world politics and policy.

She is currently based in Washington, D.C., where she's on the board of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists DC chapter.
