H.R. 4970 - VAWA Reauthorization

4/27/12 AILA Doc. No. 12051040. Congress, Humanitarian Parole, VAWA

H.R. 4970, introduced by Rep. Adams (R-FL) on April 27, 2012, proposes reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). H.R. 4970 would place victims of domestic violence in danger, deter victims of crime from cooperating with law enforcement, and hold victims of abuse to a higher standard than other applicants for immigration benefits.

On May 8, 2012, the House Judiciary Committee held a markup of H.R. 4970. The amended bill was reported out of committee by a vote of 17 -15, mostly along party lines. Rep. Poe (R-TX) joined the Democrats on the committee in voting against the bill.

On May 15, 2012 at 5pm, a Manager’s package of amendments, filed by Rep. Adams, will be discussed in the House Rules Committee. AILA anticipates the Manager’s package will be adopted into the bill, and may likely be the only amendment allowed when the bill goes to the House floor on May 16.

On May 16, 2012, H.R. 4970, as amended by the manager’s package of amendments, passed the House on a vote of 222-205.
