WASHINGTON, DC - The American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) recognizes BuzzFeed News' Hamed Aleaziz with the 2020 Media Leadership Award, given to individuals whose efforts in the media most accurately depict immigration and immigrants.
Hamed Aleaziz is an immigration reporter at BuzzFeed News, based in San Francisco, CA. Mr. Aleaziz joined BuzzFeed in 2018. Previously he had been a reporter at the San Francisco Chronicle for four years. Earlier experience included the Daily Journal, the Center for American Progress, and Mother Jones.
Mr. Aleaziz's coverage of immigration issues has garnered national acclaim. He has broken stories repeatedly over the past year; one fellow member of the press corps wondered on Twitter if he had a DHS email address as he broke story after story. While much of his work over the past quarter has focused on urgent concerns related to COVID-19 and the government’s response, his previous coverage was incisive and insightful on issues across the immigration sphere. One of his stories related to negligent medical care in Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities sparked a congressional investigation.
Mr. Aleaziz holds a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from the University of Oregon.
The American Immigration Lawyers Association is the national association of immigration lawyers established to promote justice, advocate for fair and reasonable immigration law and policy, advance the quality of immigration and nationality law and practice, and enhance the professional development of its members.
