Washington, DC - The American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) once again commends the Senate "Gang of Eight" for their continuing efforts to move forward on comprehensive immigration reform. With the introduction of their bill and today's outreach efforts, the Senators reaffirmed their commitment to a bipartisan proposal that will offer desperately needed reform to our nation's broken immigration system.

"This bill provides an intelligent architecture on which we can build a modern, commonsense immigration system for our country. The bill is not perfect, but you expect compromise in a bipartisan effort. There are some provisions that raise red flags for us and we're carefully working through the analysis to figure out the best ways to address them. Overall, this legislation provides a solid foundation to fix our broken immigration system and bring our laws into the 21st century," said AILA President Laura Lichter.

AILA is committed to ensuring that legislation meets the needs of families, businesses, and the country as a whole by:

  • Offering a wide and inclusive legalization program that provides a path to citizenship after a reasonable and definite period of time;
  • Safeguarding our borders and homeland while also safeguarding America's Constitution;
  • Ensuring that immigration enforcement is done humanely, proportionately, and in a way that guarantees due process;
  • Ensuring all families can reunite with their loved ones, including adult sons and daughters without regard to age, and the siblings of U.S. citizens;
  • Including LGBT/same-sex families in the definition of the American family;
  • Ensuring businesses of all sizes have access to the workers they need through an efficient and workable process; and
  • Protecting immigrant and U.S. workers.
