Lawful Permanent Residency 101: Procedural Overview and Visual Step-by-Step

2/6/19 AILA Doc. No. 19020701. Adjustment of Status, Consular Processing

Law students interested in the field of immigration face a steep learning curve in learning various processes and terms. One of the main pertinent legal areas has to do with the process of obtaining lawful permanent residency (LPR) through the Department of Homeland Security (initial petition and adjustment of status) and, sometimes, the Department of State (“consular processing”) and their sub-agencies.

To better understand this process, I’ve created visual graphs that outline the process. This information will help as a running start for those interested in this area of law and will provide a foundation for the new practitioners to demonstrate their basic understanding of the process to a potential employer:

John Khosravi is the Managing Attorney of the JQK Immigration Law Firm, host of www.ImmigrationLawyersPodcast.com, Adjunct Professor of Immigration Law at Loyola Law School, Los Angeles and Pepperdine Law School, and Pepperdine Law School as well as an AILA National Law Student Committee Vice-Chair. Mr. Khosravi practices immigration law in Los Angeles, CA. In his free time, Mr. Khosravi enjoys playing the guitar and spending time with his family
