Washington, DC - The American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) is proud to release the sixth edition of Immigration Consequences of Criminal Activity: A Guide to Representing Foreign-Born Defendants.

Authored by criminal immigration law expert Mary E. Kramer, Immigration Consequences is a crucial resource for attorneys to stay up-to-date on the changes in criminal immigration law practice. The volume provides a thoughtful analysis of federal case law and an easy-to-follow discussion of the most important issues in this complicated cross-section of law.

The sixth edition has been updated with analyses of important immigration and criminal law precedent decisions such as Moncrieffe, Descamps, Johnson, Taylor, and Apprendi, among others. It has been reorganized so that, chapter by chapter, step by step, it walks you through a case from beginning to end to make it easier for the reader to prepare pleas, motions, and other essential documents and arguments. The book represents the culmination of Ms. Kramer's research in preparation for articles and presentations at seminars and conferences on various criminal-immigration topics, as well as her work with immigration clients and criminal defense attorneys. She was inspired to write the book after hearing that many immigration clients were faced with mandatory detention and deportation when a few small changes made to their plea agreements could have made a world of difference.

Mary Kramer has been in private practice in Miami, Florida for almost 25 years. She is a past president of the South Florida Chapter and has served on the South Florida Board of Directors for two decades; she is an active member in AILA liaison efforts, this year on the Department of State Liaison Committee and previously as a Chair of the ICE Liaison Committee.
