SCOTUS Lifts Temporary Injunction on Immigration Stops in Los Angeles
The U.S. Supreme Court lifted a temporary injunction on certain immigration stops in Los Angeles. A District Court blocked agents from carrying out stops for which reasonable suspicion relies only on apparent race or ethnicity; use of Spanish or accented English; presence at certain locations; or occupation. Justice Sotomayor issued a dissent, joined by Justices Kagan and Jackson. (Noem v. Vasquez Perdomo, 9/8/25)
In her dissent, Justice Sotomayor wrote: “We should not have to live in a country where the Government can seize anyone who looks Latino, speaks Spanish, and appears to work a low wage job. Rather than stand idly by while our constitutional freedoms are lost, I dissent.”
