S. Amdt. 5: End the Shutdown and Secure the Border Act

On 1/24/19, the Senate rejected the "End The Shutdown and Secure The Border Act" on a 50-47 vote, largely along party lines. The following Senators crossed party lines:

Democrats that voted in favor:

  • Senator Joe Manchin (WV)

Republicans that voted against:

  • Senators Tom Cotton (AR) and Mike Lee (UT)

The Senate also rejected the Democrats counter offer (Senate Amendment 6 to H.R. 268) on a 52-44 vote, largely along party lines. The following Senators crossed party lines:

  • Senators Lamar Alexander (TN), Susan Collins (ME), Cory Gardner (CO), Johnny Isakson (GA), Lisa Murkowski (AK), and Mitt Romney (UT)


On 1/21/19, Senate Republicans introduced the "End The Shutdown and Secure The Border Act." (Senate Amendment 5 to H.R. 268) The bill aims to end the partial government shutdown by funding the Wall, more detention beds, and additional border patrol and ICE agents, while providing limited protection for Dreamers and TPS-holders, and banning Central American minors from seeking asylum at the border.
