Conference Therapy — A Self-Care Guide to Atlanta for AILA Fall Conference Attendees
Conferences are energizing, inspiring, and crucial to staying on top of the constant changes. They can also be exhausting. Between CLE sessions, networking events, committee meetings, hallway conversations, and catching up with colleagues you only see a few times a year, it is easy to spend an entire conference running on caffeine and adrenaline. If you are coming to Atlanta for the AILA Fall Conference, consider building in a little time to take care of yourself, too.
Atlanta offers plenty of opportunities to recharge, reset, and remind yourself that there is life outside of conference rooms.
Take a Walk on the BeltLine
One of the best ways to clear your mind after a full day of immigration law is a walk along the Atlanta BeltLine. What was once a network of unused rail corridors has become one of Atlanta's most engaging public spaces, connecting neighborhoods with walking and biking paths, public art, parks, restaurants, and countless people-watchers.
The Eastside Trail is especially popular and offers an easy, scenic stroll through some of Atlanta's most interesting neighborhoods. Whether you walk a mile or several, the BeltLine provides the perfect opportunity to decompress while getting some fresh air and movement. Bonus points if you leave your phone in your pocket and simply enjoy being outside for a few minutes.
From the Hyatt Regency Atlanta, a convenient Eastside Trail access point is approximately 2 miles away, generally a 10-minute drive or rideshare, depending on traffic.
Embrace Korean Spa Culture
If your idea of relaxation involves something more substantial than a walk, Atlanta's Korean spa scene is worth exploring.
Jeju Sauna in nearby Duluth is a large, traditional Korean-style bathhouse and wellness spa. For anyone unfamiliar with a Korean spa, it is designed as a place to spend several hours relaxing rather than simply stopping in for a single treatment. For a flat entrance fee, visitors can move among heated sauna rooms, hot and cold baths, relaxation areas, and add on optional massage and wellness services for an additional fee.
Jeju Sauna is generally a 30- to 45-minute drive from the Hyatt Regency Atlanta, depending on traffic.
Another excellent option is Spa Land Georgia, which offers a modern Korean spa experience featuring specialty saunas, hydrotherapy pools, and wellness amenities designed for relaxation and rejuvenation.
At either spa, expect a different routine from a traditional hotel spa. After checking in, you will receive a locker assignment and a spa uniform, a T-shirt and shorts, to wear in the shared co-ed sauna and relaxation areas. Shoes are removed before entering the locker facilities, and personal belongings stay in the provided lockers. The bathing and wet areas are separated by gender and generally require full nudity, without swimsuits or spa uniforms. Guests must shower before entering the hot tubs, cold pools, steam rooms, or other wet-area amenities. If you prefer not to use the nude bathing areas, you can remain in the uniformed co-ed areas and enjoy the specialty sauna rooms, lounges, and dining facilities. Keep voices low, respect posted rules, and avoid photographs or videos in locker rooms and bathing areas. Policies and amenities can change, so check each spa's current rules before visiting.
Spa Land Georgia is also in the Duluth area, approximately 25 to 30 miles from the Hyatt Regency Atlanta, generally a 30- to 45-minute drive, depending on traffic.
Both spas have on-site Korean restaurants. You can also visit nearby favorites such as 678 Korean BBQ or explore Buford Highway, which is known for its diverse international dining scene.
For attorneys who spend most of their days putting out fires, solving problems, and carrying clients' burdens, spending several uninterrupted hours focused solely on your own well-being can feel remarkably restorative.
Lean Into Atlanta's Halloween Spirit at Little Five Points
Depending on when you are leaving the conference, you may be able to experience one of Atlanta's most unique traditions: the Little Five Points Halloween Festival and Parade. The festival runs Saturday, October 17, and Sunday, October 18, from 12:00 to 7:00 p.m. each day. The parade begins Sunday, October 18, at 1:00 p.m. The festival includes an artist market and other fun activities like pumpkin smashing, which may be just what you need if you feel like getting a little frustration out.
Little Five Points is Atlanta's eclectic, artsy neighborhood, known for its independent shops, colorful characters, vintage stores, and creative energy. Each fall, the neighborhood transforms into a celebration of costumes, music, art, and community. The parade has been recognized as one of the country's premier Halloween events and is known for its imaginative participants, elaborate costumes, and delightfully unconventional atmosphere.
Even if you do not consider yourself a "Halloween person," spending an afternoon in Little Five Points is a great reminder that creativity and joy still exist outside immigration law updates, litigation deadlines, and policy changes.
If you are leaving before the weekend, Little Five Points is still worth a visit. The neighborhood is easy to explore on foot and offers an entertaining mix of murals, independent shops, vintage clothing, record stores, casual restaurants, and people-watching. Psycho Sisters is a longtime favorite for vintage-inspired clothing, costumes, accessories, and one-of-a-kind pieces. Nearby, Junkman’s Daughter is packed with novelty gifts, eclectic clothing, accessories, home décor, and other unexpected finds. Together, the stores capture the creative, unconventional spirit of Little Five Points and make the area a fun place to browse, even if you are not shopping for anything in particular.
Little Five Points is approximately 3 miles from the Hyatt Regency Atlanta, generally a 10-minute drive or rideshare, about 20 minutes by bus, or roughly a 50-minute walk.
Catch Atlanta United Against Inter Miami
For a high-energy Saturday break, Atlanta United hosts Inter Miami CF at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on October 17, 2026, at 7:30 p.m. The matchup offers a chance to see Lionel Messi after his recently announced retirement from Argentina's national team. He continues to play professionally for Inter Miami, so this is an international retirement rather than a retirement from club soccer.
Mercedes-Benz Stadium is approximately 1.4 miles from the Hyatt Regency Atlanta, generally about a 20- to 30-minute walk, a short rideshare, or an approximately 18-minute MARTA trip. Allow extra time for match-day crowds and stadium entry.
Give Yourself Permission to Step Away
Immigration lawyers are not known for taking breaks. We are accustomed to carrying heavy caseloads, responding to urgent developments, and worrying about our clients even when we are technically off the clock.
But conferences are not just about earning CLE credit or attending committee meetings. They are also an opportunity to reconnect with colleagues, explore a new city, and care for yourself.
So while you are in Atlanta, consider taking some time for yourself whether enjoying any of the above or something else. The immigration landscape will still be waiting when you get back.
And you might find that a little self-care makes you better equipped to face it.
