114th Senate Takes Up Sanctuary Cities

The Senate voted down S. 3100, the "Stop Dangerous Sanctuary Cities Act," by a vote of 53 to 44 and S. 2193, the "Stop Illegal Reentry Act," by a vote of 55 to 42. Both proposals needed 60 votes to advance to the Senate floor. AILA urged senators to vote against these bills, which would undermine public safety and due process.

Senator Pat Toomey's (R-PA) "Stop Dangerous Sanctuary Cities Act" and Senator Ted Cruz's (R-TX) "Stop Illegal Reentry Act" are expected to have a procedural vote on July 6, 2016.

Senator Pat Toomey (R-PA) introduced S. 3100, the "Stop Dangerous Sanctuary Cities Act," which would force local police to become immigration enforcement agents by threatening to withhold millions of dollars in federal grants to so-called "sanctuary cities."
October 20, 2015
The Senate blocked S. 2146 by a vote of 54-45. The bill needed 60 votes to advance to the Senate floor. AILA urged senators to vote against the bill, which would undermine safety and trust by withholding federal grants from localities with community trust policies. After multiple delays to the markup of S. 1814 in the Senate Judiciary Committee, Senator David Vitter (R-LA) introduced new legislation, S. 2146, Stop Sanctuary Policies and Protect Americans Act. This measure is expected to have a procedural vote on October 20, 2015.
